Last weekend Greg Gunsalus took the Under 23 leader’s jersey in the Vittoria Cyclocross Series. This young rider is part of a new crop of American stars drawn into the sport through the New England circuit, the zenith of which was the early season “Holy Week” of Providence and Gloucester. With big league courses and huge turnouts of spectators, riders young and old circled those dates on their calendars. That focus raised every rider’s game, notably the region’s young juniors. The photo below shows six of these boys racing the early laps of Providence with four identifiable, from left, Sam Noel, Lane Maher, Greg Gunsalus and Harrison White. Fast forward a few years to see all four representing the U.S in international competition. The photo below shows three of those four in their National Team attire. Five of the eight shown were products of the New England circuit. The organizers of the KMC CrossFest put emphasis on providing the young riders the highest production value possible and pledge continued support for youth programs.
